Late Payment Fine Calculator

Type what you owe and how late it is, and see the penalty and the total.

Penalty rates, caps, and grace periods differ by place and by contract, so type in the rate that applies to you. A part of a month counts as a whole month here. The result is an estimate, not legal advice.

Enter an unpaid amount, days late, and a penalty rate.

How it works

With a per-day penalty, the penalty is the unpaid amount times the rate times the number of days late. With a per-month penalty, the days late are rounded up to whole months, so 35 days counts as 2 months, and the penalty is the amount times the rate times that month count. A fixed fine, if there is one, is added on top. The total owed is the original amount plus the penalty plus the fixed fine.

FAQ

What is the difference between a penalty and a fixed fine?

A penalty grows with time, by day or by month, until you pay. A fixed fine is a one-off amount added no matter how late you are. This tool adds both, so the total covers either case.

Why does 35 days count as 2 months?

Because a part of a month counts as a whole month in this tool, which is how many penalty rules work. If your rule counts only full months, use the per-day option or work out the months yourself.

Does the penalty stop growing?

Some rules cap the penalty at a set amount or a set percent of what you owe, and some stop after a set time. This tool has no cap built in, so if your rule has one, cap the penalty figure yourself.
